Renting a House in the Western Cape: 5 Things to Consider

When it comes to renting a house in the Western Cape, there are certain things you have to consider before signing the lease. Here are our top five.

1. The Neighbourhood

Do you want to live in the city, or are smaller towns your thing? It’s important to know yourself and your needs before renting a house in the Western Cape since big city life isn’t for everyone.

Luckily, there are many smaller towns and less busy suburbs in the Western Cape. Take Paarl, for example. While away from the hustle and bustle of Cape Town CBD, it’s rich in fine restaurants, coffee shops and cultural experiences.

2. Work and Commute

Where will you be working? Your preferred method of travel and those expenses should also be considered when renting a house in the Western Cape.

For some, it might be ideal to live in the Cape Winelands and commute to work in Cape Town CBD every day, while others may not be able to afford or endure it. Do your research on traffic in the area and not just the distance.

3. Weather Conditions

The weather is another factor to consider before renting a house in the Western Cape. Since winters are rainy and summer is often quite windy, you may want to look at a property with space for a tumble dryer or indoor drying facilities, for example.

4. Affordability

Before renting a house, check your budget! Life in the city centre can be pretty expensive. Whether you have a family or are living solo, you’ll have to work out precisely what you can afford before finding the perfect property.

5. House Orientation

Always check which direction the house is facing to ensure you get enough sunlight and are shielded from the wind. Ideally, you want your home to face north, which helps with passive heating and cooling.
